Kilchoman Machir Bay

The first week of May 2015 I spend in a hotel in Chicago, to have something nice to drink there I had purchased a bottle of Kilchoman Machir Bay gift pack for myself. It was a bottle with two complimentary glen cairn glasses, so I didn’t have to drink from a plastic cup. Being a Kilchoman enthusiast this bottle was not new to new to me. However, I haven’t ranked it yet so this was a good time to review the malt.

Kilchoman Machir Bay has no age indication on the bottle, however this was the 2014 release of the Machir Bay. Unlike most Kilchoman releases Machir Bay is matured in both Bourbon barrels and Sherry casks affording it a beautiful balance of rich tropical fruit, peat smoke, light vanilla and intense sweetness.  Different editions of Machir Bay have been released in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

These are the tasting notes from Peter Wills:

  • Nose: Sweet, vanilla intermingles with lemongrass and a hint of peat.
  • Taste: Rich and creamy, with the initial sweet vanilla turning into dark chocolate, spicy clove and peat smoke.
  • Finish: Medium-long, with dark chocolate, clove and peat smoke.

This displays the best of both worlds: creamy, sweet vanilla from the bourbon barrels and dark chocolate and clove from the oloroso casks. These flavours are then beautifully integrated with the peat smoke – an exceptional whisky for the price.

Followed by what I make of it when I tasted it, initially I tasted it blind, so I had no idea what whisky it was. This makes it more special when you think of it, since I am unbiased at that time.

Nose: Fresh Fruit, Light Peated, some hints of Vanilla.

Taste: Nice fresh Whisky, a young whisky – sturdy and impatient, decent amount of peat.

Finish: Sweet and short, not too explosive and light.

Price: € 45.00

Mark: 89 – I mark this Machir Bay higher than the expert do, my main reason for this is because I find that this young whisky (somewhere around 4-5 years old) shows a great flavour that can stand on its own between the more mature and celebrated Islay Whiskies.
